Abstract:
In the past decades there has been a significant advance in environmental issues and a bigger global commitment to sustainable development. Nevertheless, evident signs of environmental decay show us that the facing of current social and environmental challenges will demand an extra effort from society towards the big questions which nowadays prevent the adherence to the paradigm of sustainable development.
A top priority theme on the Agenda 21, the unsustainability of the current standards of production and consumption comes up as an urgent and necessary debate with a difficult approach in a society based on a developmental ideology and in expectation of a universal spread of a high consumption model capable of generating affluent societies throughout the planet. Based on the concept of Sustainable Development and presenting a theoretical review about Sustainable Consumption this essay supplies some reflections on the theme by placing a special emphasis on Product-Service System.
