Abstract:
The mining and metals industry faces the depletion of resources, the stewardship of land, and the impacts on local communities as issues central to its operations. While sustainability is a watchword in many industries, in the mining and metals industry, it is tangible and immediate. Corporate social responsibility is not a matter of philanthropy but of core competence. Environmental stewardship in the supply chain often starts with mining and metals. Key to the mining and metals industry is the fact that operations must be located where resources are—and this can often be in locations that present both environmental and social challenges to companies. The relationship between business and multiple stakeholders in the local community has been brought to life through cases in mining and other energy-related industries. The lessons are applicable to other industries.
